What changed ₱38,000 quoted → ₱31,000 lease
My daughter kept sending me articles about foreigners who wired a deposit to a man who didn’t even own the place. At 71, you don’t get a second try with your savings.
Valery was at the airport with a sign. The apartment in Mabolo was lined up before I ever flew — I’d had the address for three weeks. The owner wanted ₱38,000. Valery did the talking; I kept my mouth shut. We walked out at ₱31,000, one month deposit instead of two — a little over $500 a month for a place that would’ve run me $900 back home.
Before I signed anything, he laid the land title from the Registry of Deeds next to the owner’s ID. Same name. Then he had the lease notarized and read me every line — what happens to my deposit when I leave, who pays to fix the aircon. Nobody was going to take my money and disappear.
What went wrong? The unit had no lightbulbs — apparently that’s normal here. Valery laughed and drove me to the hardware store.
